This class begins with a discussion of the Yellow Press, sensationalistic tabloid newspapers that were not above manufacturing public hysteria and panic to sell papers. We will talk about Joseph Pulitzer, William, Randolph Hearst, Nelly Bly, Theodore Roosevelt, Carl Schurz and other colorful figures of the era.
This led to the Spanish-American War that resulted in a large-scale acquisition of foreign territories and a prolonged brutal war in the Philippines to suppress people who mistakenly believed that we had ousted Spain in order to give them their freedom.
